Depending on the patient’s age and lifestyle, fluoride treatment may be prescribed to enhance the longevity of teeth and resistance to cavity formation. This manner of therapy is typically performed as an adjunct to regular cleanings at intervals suggested by the dentist and hygienist and, of course, accepted and agreed by the patient. To ensure maximum effectiveness, patients are asked not to eat or drink for 30 minutes after their visit. This helps facilitate proper penetration of the fluoride into tooth structure.
